Africa-Press – Angola. Shakespeare’s phrase “Fools lead the blind” resonates as a warning and a philosophical provocation. It suggests a scenario where those who should have discernment are lost in the darkness of ignorance, while those who lead, instead of being wise and balanced, are driven by delirium, impulsiveness or distorted interests. It is a powerful metaphor to describe societies where misinformation, manipulation and lack of critical thinking become the norm.

The “crazy” can represent leaders, institutions or ideologies that, instead of promoting the common good, are guided by illusions, obsessions and, often, by an unbridled search for power. The “blind” symbolize those who, out of conformity, fear or alienation, follow without questioning, without seeing beyond the shadows projected before them. Thus, a vicious cycle is formed: rulers devoid of reason or ethics command masses that do not have the clarity to discern the right direction.

This dilemma is not new. At different times in history, entire civilizations have been led by leaders who, in the name of extreme ideologies, irrational passions or excessive ambitions, led their people to collapse. When truth is stifled and critical thinking is replaced by dogmatism, fertile ground is created for the insane to guide the unwary towards the abyss.

Unfortunately, nowadays, insanity is no longer limited to the spheres of power or institutional disorder — it is part of our deepest secrets and vices. Madness, disguised as normality, finds shelter in the collective soul, in silent habits, in the lies we tell ourselves so as not to face the responsibility of freedom. Thus, the delirium that controls the systems also feeds the innermost being of a sick society, where emotional vices, the denial of reality and the escape from pain reinforce the dominion of the insane over those who prefer not to see. Blindness, in this context, is not just the absence of light, but the deliberate refusal to wake up.

However, there is a way out. The only way to break this cycle is to replace blindness with lucidity and madness with balance. This requires education, reflection and, above all, the courage to question those in power. When the blind begin to see and the mad are unmasked, reality can finally free itself from the darkness and move towards a more just and conscious horizon.
