Africa-Press – Angola. The president of the Parliament of Tanzania, Tulia Ackson, was elected, this Friday, in Luanda, the 31st president of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIP), during the 147th General Assembly of the multilateral Organization.
Tulia Ackson, who replaced the Portuguese Duarte Pacheco in office, won the election with 172 votes in a single round.
Malawi’s candidate, Catherine Gotani Hara, obtained 61 votes, Senegal’s (Adji Diarra Mergane Kanouté) 59 votes, while Somalia’s candidate, Marwa Abdibashir Hagi, obtained just 11 votes.
More than 300 members of parliaments from 130 countries around the world participated in the selection ceremony held at the Palace of the National Assembly.
Tulia Ackson is the first UIP woman on the African continent and in the history of East Africa to hold the presidency of this organization.
In the last 25 years, the post has been occupied by deputies from countries such as Egypt, Spain, India, Chile, Italy, Namibia, Morocco, Bangladesh, Mexico.
In her first statement, as president of the UIP, Tulia Ackson said that she will work diligently and tirelessly to respond to a multitude of challenges facing the world and strive to achieve the goals and aspirations of the UIP.

A lawyer and prominent academic in her country, Tulia Ackson has demonstrated leadership skills throughout her parliamentary career.
Before being elected president of the National Assembly of the United Republic of Tanzania, in February 2022, a position she currently holds, Tulia Ackson was vice-president and member of Parliament from 2015 to 2022.
She also served as Deputy Attorney General of Tanzania for a brief period in 2015.
Following her appointment as Deputy Attorney General of Tanzania, her notable contribution as a presidentially appointed member of her country’s Constituent Assembly followed.
As President and MP for Mbeya Urban Constituency (South West), Tulia Ackson participated in several IPU meetings, including, among others, the 144th and 146th UIP General Assembly, 51st Session of the SADC Parliamentary Forum Assembly , the 65th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPP) and in several African Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Parliamentary Assemblies.
Tulia Ackson, 45, is also president of the African Geopolitical Group at the IPU and the Investment Board of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) for the African region.
