Africa-Press – Angola. The president of the National Assembly (AN), Carolina Cerqueira, considered, this Friday, the election of Tulia Ackson (Tanzania) to the presidency of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIP) a tribute to the resilient and courageous women of Southern Africa.

“The election of our sister and colleague from Tanzania was a success, it is a tribute to the resilient and courageous women of Southern Africa”, said Carolina Cerqueira after the election of the President of the Parliament of Tanzania to the leadership of the IPU.

He also considered the Southern region to be the most stable in Africa as it contains countries that had a path of reaffirmation struggle against Apartheid and colonialism, for development, peace and harmony.

“We, particularly the Angolans, are very pleased that it was Southern Africa that raised the African flag”, he stated.

She explained that the election of Tuila Ackson, the president of the IPU, represents not only a victory for women in Southern Africa, but for the continent in general.

Victory of parliamentary diplomacy

Carolina Cerqueira said that holding the 147th General Assembly of the IPU in the Angolan capital, Luanda, was a victory for Angolan parliamentary diplomacy.

“We gathered in Luanda more than a thousand and 500 participants from 131 countries around the world, it was a record level of participation at country level in the last UIP meetings”, he highlighted.

She added that more than 71 percent of women were represented from the countries present at the event, including the delegation from the Bahamas, a country admitted as the 180th member of the IPU at the Luanda Summit.

As I said, Angola is a country of peace, reconciliation and committed to sustainable development and improving the living conditions of its populations, despite the global crisis the world is going through.
