Africa-Press – Angola. The outgoing president of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIP), Duarte Pacheco, praised, this Friday, the Angolan authorities “for the brilliant way” in which they organized the 147th Assembly of the multilateral organization.

Duarte Pacheco spoke at the closing of the 147th IPU General Assembly about parliamentary action, peace and strong institutions, which brought together more than 1,500 delegates from 130 countries.

“On the first day, I conveyed that we had confidence in your organization, now I can say that we also have confidence in your implementation, because the preparation was excellent, he underlined.

He noted that, throughout the event, the excellence of the entire National Assembly staff was confirmed, so that together with the UIP staff they could successfully complete the work.

He recalled that, in 2020, at the beginning of his mandate, he made a commitment to hold an Assembly of the organization in a Portuguese-speaking country.

“We are a community of brothers, we had this ambition, fortunately, it is not a dream, it is a reality, we implemented this Assembly in Luanda,” he maintained.

He highlighted that more than 1,500 participants, from 130 countries, parliamentarians from all continents crossed the oceans and came to Luanda to actively participate in the IU Assembly.

He also emphasized the adoption of the Luanda Declaration, which highlights the active role in governance in the social version, recognizing the inseparable link between populations and institutions.

“Our role, as legislators and those responsible for supervising the Executive, puts us in a unique position to be champions of forms of governance, ensure transparency and restore trust in institutions”, he highlighted.

The 147th Assembly marked the end of Duarte Pacheco’s mandate at the helm of the UIP.

He congratulated his successor, Tulia Ackson, on her election to the UIP’s top seat.

“I’m sure she will be a fantastic president because she has the strength, competence and professionalism of a woman in Africa.” she creased.
