Africa-Press – Angola. The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, said this Friday in Havana, Cuba, that the rate of poverty and hunger is increasingly increasing in developing countries, in sequence of global crises.
Antonio Guterres made this reference at the official opening of the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Group of 77+China, which will take place until Saturday, where Angola will be represented by President João Lourenço.
In his intervention, the senior UN official mentioned that, in addition to poverty and hunger, there is an increase in the prices of basic products and public debts, also associated with frequent climate disasters.
“Global systems and structures have failed. The conclusion is clear, the world is failing developing countries,” she lamented.
To change the situation, António Guterres defended the need for actions to guarantee good governance, as well as the mobilization of resources and giving priority to sustainable development.
In this context, he noted that global action is needed, which respects national ownership to build an international system in defense of human rights.
“This requires the G-77+China to use their voice to fight for a world that works for everyone”, he expressed, arguing that the task begins with the multilateral system itself.
Science and technology
Regarding science, technology and innovation, the main theme of the Summit’s general debate, António Guterres argued that it can forge solidarity, solve common problems and help make sustainable development objectives a reality.
In this regard, the UN Secretary-General lamented the fact that African states pay three times more than the global average for data, while technology “titans” accumulate unimaginable wealth.
“Only global action can combat these inequalities, guarantee a fair transition to a digital economy and in a new technological era, no one is left behind”, he expressed.
For António Guterres, the UN proposal for the Global Digital Compact can achieve exactly that.
Its aim, he highlighted, is to bring together governments and industry so that technology works for all humanity and accelerates sustainable development goals.
The G-77+China was created on June 15, 1964 by 77 developing countries and is the largest and most diverse group in the multilateral arena, with 134 Member States, including Angola, representing two thirds of the members of the United Nations system. United States and 80 percent of the world’s population.
The group’s purpose is to promote the collective economic interests of its members and improve their capacity for multilateral negotiation within the United Nations System.
