UNAP Secretary General considers date for reflection

Africa-Press – Angola. Today, plastic artists celebrate World Art Day, an event that will be celebrated in the country for the first time, although the date was established 10 years ago by the International Art Association and recognized by UNESCO.

The secretary general of the National Union of Plastic Artists (Unap), Fernandes Carvalho “Tozé”, considers the 15th of April as a date for reflection so that art is seen as a link to raise awareness both for creators and for the consumer public who contemplates her.

In 2012, the International Art Association (IAA) instituted World Arts Day as a way to raise awareness of the importance of creative activity and the promotion of art around the world.

For the secretary general of Unap, the date serves as a reflection because art “unites ethnicities, peoples and cultures”, the result of the universal language that characterizes it.

In his view, the country should offer conditions that allow artistic institutions to organize activities in order to raise the awareness of society as a whole about the importance of the arts, through debates and conferences, in order to create greater interest and respect for the artistic concept.

“Art is closely linked to culture and to the manifestations of various expressions of human feeling and intellect”, highlighted the painter, who currently directs Unap.

The date – April 15th – was commemorated for the first time in 2012, in honor of the birth of Leonardo da Vinci, one of the main names of the High Renaissance and one of the most complete artists of all time, considered a symbol of freedom of expression and multiculturalism.

On this day, fine arts are celebrated, all over the world and by all international entities related to the theme. The Executive Board of UNESCO decided that the World Art Day should be commemorated, whenever possible, with international days.

Celebrations in Luanda

The Hotel Globo, in downtown Luanda, will host from today the collective exhibition, “Kimba – Modernidade Fantasma”, which brings together works by Edson Chagas, Toy Boy, Wyssolela Moreira, Nelo Teixeira, Irad and Kiluanji Kia Henda. organized by the Pop-Up gallery, from Jahmek-Contemporary Art, in partnership with Big Media and Refriango, to celebrate the 15th of April, World Art Day.

The exhibition proposes a reflection on experimentation processes and the potential of the immaterial aspects of architecture and lived space, on the spatio-temporal overlaps that carry and infuse places, objects and situations with a cultural memory, and that are articulated in forms, different languages and aesthetics. As a whole, the works go beyond the simple criticism of the abandoned structure, and represent the latent potential of spaces such as the “treme-treme” building in downtown Luanda.

Yesterday, the Pop-Up gallery – reopened in the space of the Hotel Globo – and the Big Media network held a press conference at 11:00 am at the Hotel Globo, to publicize the project “First Digital Urban Art Gallery in the World”, which brings together 23 works in digital format.

For Mehak Vieira, co-founder of Jahmek Contemporary Art, this project is the result of a collaboration that could be said to be unlikely. “Art is normally alienated from brands, however, in recent years, we have seen more and more collaborative work between commercial brands and artists”, said gallery owner Mehak Vieira. Mehak said that, “today we have not only artists represented by Jahmek, but also artists that we believe represent the new generation of Angolan art.”.
