Africa-Press – Angola. The Deputy Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Gabriel Dava, acknowledged in the city of Cuito, central Bié Province, the efforts of the Angolan Government in defending and protecting human rights.
Gabriel Dava made this recognition while speaking at the central event commemorating the International Day of the Proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, celebrated on Wednesday, December 10.
According to him, in the UNDP’s view, Angola is an example to be followed in matters of human rights and should continue to lead in promoting the principle that no one should be left behind in this regard.
Among the achievements, he highlighted the fact that the Angolan State has ratified most of the United Nations treaties and complies with the recommendations of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, in addition to its role as a member of the Human Rights Council.
He pointed, as an example, to the fact that Luanda, the capital of Angola, was recently the site of the adoption of Resolution 275 of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights on violence against sexual and gender minorities.
For this reason, Gabriel Dava congratulated the Government of Angola for the significant contributions it has been making at the level of global/international human rights systems, the progress achieved, and the continuous efforts undertaken to ensure that health services are provided efficiently and responsibly.
He also stated that, although there is still a long way to go, human rights in Angola are achievable, provided everyone is involved.
“The issue of human rights is not just the responsibility of the Government and civil society, but concerns everyone,” he stressed, mobilizing everyone’s involvement in this matter.
Accordingly, he encouraged all partners of the Angolan Government to work together to make these rights accessible to more people without leaving anyone behind.
On this occasion, he reaffirmed UNDP’s commitment to continue working innovatively with the Government of Angola, civil society, and international partners, aiming to guarantee the essential human rights of all.
He promised his organization’s support to the Ministry of Justice and the continued implementation of joint actions, revealing the recent training action directed at the local Human Rights committees of the provinces of Benguela, Bié, and Cuanza Sul.
In addition, he said that 20 laptops and 45 computers had been made available for data collection and dissemination of activities related to human rights.
As for the Ministry of Health, he said that support will be focused on creating a favorable legal environment for better health outcomes for all, contributing to and preventing stigma and discrimination, especially against people living with HIV/AIDS, with emphasis on the ongoing process of reforming current legislation.
The central event of this year’s commemorations was a conference on human rights, held under the theme “Human Rights: Essential in our daily lives.”
The event was led by the Secretary of State for Human Rights, Antónia Osvaldina Simão da Cruz Yaba.
