Africa-Press – Angola. Several UNITA pamphlets are appearing on the streets of Luanda, announcing Adalberto Costa Júnior as its candidate for the year 2027. Is UNITA confident of its victory in the next presidential elections?

Recently, members of the Trump administration have been meeting with leaders of UNITA, but not the MPLA, as Joe Biden did in late 2024, which would be a sign that the new US administration may be interested in another party in power.

Recent history and the dynamics of presidential elections in various parts of the world show that American support plays an important role in the presidential election, considering that the United States is considered the most powerful nation in the world and seeks partners committed to its geopolitical project. Could this be the reason for UNITA’s confidence in the upcoming presidential elections or are there other factors?

For some time now, the MPLA has been losing popularity among the Angolan population, due to the corruption schemes involving the party, the “marimbondagem”, the controversial Lobito corridor project, the subservience to American interests, among other reasons, without forgetting the great role of João Lourenço in distorting the image of his own party.

What do the UNITA leaflets in Luanda mean? Are they a challenge to the MPLA? Are they a call to action? Perhaps they are a way of showing the US that the money they received for the election campaign is not being plundered like the MPLA, but that it has already been channeled in the right direction, to the election campaign?

These are just speculations, but some facts can be observed, for example the similarity of UNITA’s pamphlets with those of Donald Trump’s campaign, some even with phrases in English and the same aesthetic as American Republican pamphlets. Has UNITA embraced “Trumpism”?

It seems that the US has really bet on UNITA and speculation in the Angolan alternative media that the US ambassador met with Costa Júnior for some reason is confirmed judging by the facts observed in the Angolan capital. As the Romans used to say, “alea jacta est”! UNITA is confident that it will face the MPLA at the polls in the next elections and judging not only by the Americans’ support for UNITA, but also by the MPLA’s poor performance in solving problems such as corruption and cholera, the year 2027 could bring many surprises.
