Unitel'S Submarine Cable Reinforces Angola'S Digital Sovereignty

Africa-Press – Angola. The minister of Telecommunications, Information Technology and Mass Media, Mário Oliveira, stressed on Saturday (13) in Luanda that Unitel’s entry into the international consortium for the “2Africa” submarine cable marks a decisive step forward for Angola’s digital sovereignty and telecommunications security.

Speaking at the inauguration of this technological infrastructure, the minister stated that the country needed new international techs capable of responding to the accelerated growth of data traffic and the demands of the digital economy.

According to the minister, Unitel’s investment comes at a time when the “SAT-3” submarine cable is reaching the end of its useful life, after 25 years of operation, and the “WACS” is at the maximum limit of its capacity.

He highlighted that 2Africa arrives as the most modern technological solution, expanding transmission capacity, reinforcing connection redundancy, and positioning the country among the African markets best prepared for the challenges of global connectivity.

“For technical, strategic, and sovereignty reasons, this was the most appropriate decision. By laying the 2Africa cable in national territory, Angola guarantees a stable, independent, and future-oriented international route, opening space for the development of data centers, AI, fintechs, e-commerce, digital services, and the entire new generation of the data-driven economy,” he highlighted.

Mário Oliveira added that the country becomes more competitive, connected, and secure, consolidating a new chapter in the national digital transformation.
