Mariagrazia Russo explained that, recently, the University of International Studies in Rome awarded the title of Dr. Honoris Causa to the figure of the first President of Angola.

“In Rome, we have done two or three very important things: the first is to place a bust of Agostinho Neto. It is one of the first busts of an African in Rome. It is in a garden, close to a school and, therefore, frequented by many students”, highlighted the dean.

Regarding the changes in Angola in the most diverse areas, Mariagrazia Russo made it known that the policy accompanies academic university reforms related to women, adding that this goes from instruction, education and is present in intellectuals within the cultural world.

According to the university professor and dean, among 85 Italian deans, only 12 are women, considering this a way to strengthen the female presence in Angola as in Italy.

The secretary general of the OMA, Joana Tomás, assured that it is working with some universities outside of Angola, mainly those focused on women, highlighting the University of International Studies in Rome. She said that Mariagrazia Russo, in addition to being dean, is also dedicated to studying problems linked to women and intends to work on cases of domestic violence and family empowerment.

The OMA official stressed that the meeting also served to address women’s empowerment, through teaching, and provided the possibility for Angolan students to attend the University of International Studies in Rome, as well as projects linked to culture and literature Africans.

“We need more women to study, more women to graduate, so that promotion is based on meritocracy”, highlighted Joana Tomás.

The vice-rector informed that the visit served to establish partnerships in staff training and research projects: “Our participation in the organization’s activities, mainly in family counseling centers, is an opportunity for students to participate in these projects and achieve give a signal to society that the work done here, at UAN, is of quality and that graduates can certainly participate in the country’s development. In fact, this is what is expected of a university”.

During the conversations, it was agreed, soon, that a protocol would be signed between the Cathedral of Rome and the Agostinho Neto University: “It will make perfect sense for this protocol to be signed, for it to materialize, so that we can then drink of the experience of this university. And also benefit from the academic mobility projects, necessarily, foreseen in the protocol to be signed”.
