Africa-Press – Angola. A self-portrait by the artist Vincent van Gogh, over 100 years old, was discovered, Thursday (14), “camouflaged” behind another painting, Lusa reported.
In preparation for the exhibition “A Taste for Impressionism”, at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh, specialists from the National Galleries of Scotland came across, using an X-ray, a portrait of the artist, hidden between layers of cardboard. and glue, behind the painting “Head of a Peasant Woman”, from 1885.
Van Gogh was known for reusing canvas, working on the opposite side, so as to save money.
Specialists believe that this is a first exploration of the famous self-portraits, which still include the artist’s left ear, cut in 1888.
Visitors to the exhibition will be able to see the portrait through a light box, as the best way to separate the paintings without damaging them is still being considered. “What a wonderful gift to Scotland, one that will forever be in the care of the National Galleries. We are very excited about the discovery,” revealed curator Frances Fowle.
For her part, curator Lesley Stevenson pointed out that the discovery gives more clues about what we know about the artist’s life. “There’s a lot to think about and this is yet another piece that brings this incredible artist closer together.”
