Africa-Press – Angola. The Vice-President of the Republic, Esperança da Costa, this Tuesday, in Mbanza Kongo (Zaire), highlighted the role of traditional authorities in transmitting ancestral cultural values ​​to the new generation.

Addressing the traditional authorities of Lumbu (Corte Real Kongo), the Vice-President of the Republic highlighted the concept of traditional or customary court which, in the region, helps to harmonize community life.

“It is an honor to be here in Lumbu, considered the main center of the customary court, where eminent traditional figures play their part in supporting our communities in what is right for the family and the well-being of the whole society” , he stated.

He also highlighted the continued maintenance of relations between local traditional authorities and those of the three neighboring countries that made up the former Kingdom of Kongo, namely the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Republic of Congo and Gabon.

Esperança da Costa informed that his visit to Mbanza Kongo essentially aims to verify the reality of this historic center, inscribed on the list of Cultural Heritage of Humanity, on 8 July 2017, with a view to identifying, correcting and finding solutions to the various difficulties still existing.

To this end, he reiterated the Executive’s engagement in correcting some problems with which the aforementioned Cultural Heritage of Humanity is still struggling.

This afternoon, the Vice-President will lead the 1st Ordinary Session of the National Multisectoral Commission for the Safeguarding of the World Cultural Heritage, this year.

The meeting will analyze the current status of monuments and historic sites in Mbanza Kongo.

The session will also review the proposals for the International Festival of Culture (FESTIKONGO) program and the Commission’s Action Plan for the period 2023, as well as other aspects related to the implementation of UNESCO recommendations on the Management Plan for this city. World Heritage.

The commission intends to ensure the development of actions identified with a view to preserving, valuing and managing cultural heritage, in accordance with international conventions and treaties on the matter, to which Angola is a party, namely the convention on World, Cultural and Natural Heritage , approved in 1972 at the General Conference of the United Nations for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO).

Esperança da Costa has already visited the Museum of the Kings of Kongo, where he received a detailed explanation on the historical and cultural significance of the collection on display, as well as on how it works.

The local cultural center Comandante Bula is due to reopen yesterday, after benefiting from rehabilitation, expansion and modernization works.

On Wednesday, the second and last day of her visit to Zaire, the Vice-President will travel to the Nkinde commune, which is 32 kilometers from the city of Mbanza Kongo, to check on the progress of works on the new local airport.

The delegation includes the ministers of Territorial Administration, Culture, Education, Fisheries and Marine Resources, Public Works, Urban Planning and Housing, as well as the Secretaries of State of some ministerial departments and heads of their cabinet.
