Africa-Press – Angola. The Brazilian Institute of Family Law denounced that, in Angola, women and children continue to be subordinate to men, “seen as the boss and provider”, who end up imposing his will “often through violence”.

“This reality, in a multicultural society, compromises the practical implementation of laws, demanding a more significant intervention by the State in the education and protection of vulnerable individuals in family relationships and victims of domestic violence,” said Angolan judge Arlindo da Silva Castro, president of the Angolan branch of the Brazilian Institute of Family Law – IBDFAM, in the latest edition of the institute’s magazine.

Arlindo da Silva Castro, born in the urban district of Sambizanga, in Luanda, and a graduate in Law from the Methodist University of Angola, also stressed that Angolan women and children are “subordinate figures in the family context in which the man, often seen as the head and provider, ends up legitimized to impose his will — often through violence”.

The Angolan judge therefore called for more action on the part of the Angolan Government, such as the Maria da Penha Law (the name given to Brazilian legislation that guarantees the protection of women against any type of domestic violence), through the implementation of public policies, the fight against “cultural barriers” and the strengthening of the State’s actions.

“It is necessary to recognize that the issue of domestic violence is not limited to this discussion, but we believe that it represents a relevant contribution to Family Law.

This is because, despite legislative advances in several countries, the implementation of gender equality still faces significant obstacles, especially in multicultural contexts such as Angola,” said Arlindo da Silva Castro.
