Africa-Press – Angola. The Republic of Zimbabwe intends to identify the graves of Zimbabwean soldiers who died during an armed mission in the Province of Malanje during the period of struggle against the Portuguese colonial regime to achieve national independence.
To this end, a delegation led by the Deputy Minister for Veterans Affairs of the Zimbabwe Liberation Struggle, Headman Moyo, began a working mission Monday, in the municipality of Caculama, where battles were fought and several Zimbabwean soldiers are buried.
Upon their arrival in Malanje, they were received by the Deputy Governor of Malanje for Political, Social and Economic Affairs, Franco Mufinda, members of the Government, with whom they took the opportunity to discuss the matter.
On the occasion, Headman Moyo said that his country intends to build a memorial in the municipality of Caculama, at the site where the fallen former military men lie, to honor and value their memories and their contribution to the freedom of the Zimbabwean and Angolan peoples.
He explained that an estimated 10 veterans are buried in these locations, adding that the memorial will represent a symbol of respect, recognition, and strengthening of the historical ties that unite the two countries.
In turn, the Deputy Governor of the province, Franco Mufinda expressed the provincial government’s willingness to provide all necessary institutional support to ensure the success of the aforementioned mission.
He noted that the solidarity shown by Angola in welcoming and supporting Zimbabwean fighters in the past, constitutes a factor of brotherhood between the two African peoples, which is why the provincial government will collaborate in all initiatives aimed at building the memorial, as well as to preserve historical memory.
In the municipality of Caculama, the delegation will interact with administrative and traditional authorities, and will then visit the graves with the aim to collect additional data that will allow for more accurate documentation of the historical facts related to Zimbabwean fighters in the region.
Before Malanje, the fighters in question passed through Moxico Province, where they once completed part of their military training.
