Africa-Press – Botswana. The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC) warned that more than 22 million people will be left without food in the Horn of Africa and warned that the situation is expected to worsen in 2023.”Millions of lives are at risk, and as the humanitarian community accelerates the response, we must ensure that the mistakes of the past decade are not repeated; it is crucial that aid is not only available, but reaches the right people efficiently. “, said IFRC leader in Kenya and Somalia, Mohamed Babiker, adding that aid has to be secured through a local response.

In the statement, the IFRC says that nearly a million people have been forced to flee their homes in search of food and water in parts of Somalia and Kenya, which are experiencing a “catastrophic food crisis” that continues to worsen.

“More than 22 million people are approaching or already experiencing a complete lack of food in the Horn of Africa, and the situation is expected to worsen in early 2023,” the statement added.

The humanitarian response, said the official, faces two major challenges: “the biggest is the lack of resources to buy emergency materials, but even if there is money, it is necessary that this aid reaches the nomadic communities in an efficient and consistent way”.

So far, the IFRC in Kenya and Somalia has helped at least 645,000 people affected by the drought, providing them with health services and cash donations, as well as water, sanitation and hygiene services, the statement concludes.
