Africa-Press – Botswana. The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) president, Mokgweetsi Masisi has appointed a new Political Education and Elections Committee (PEEC) as an effort to strengthen key party sub-committees, which had been limping.
Where it was previously a norm that the committee could have 15 members or less, now Masisi chose 25 members of his loyalists.
According to the BDP constitution, sub-committees are the Presidents’ discretion and it does not specify the number of members the committee should have.
Normally, the sub-committees are chosen by the President every two years.
Former PPEC chairperson, Alec Seametso has returned to the position and the Minister for Presidential Affairs, Governance and Public Administration Kabo Morwaeng has been chosen as the secretary.
Some of the members include Daniel Molokwe, Dominic Gumbalume, Bontsi Monare, Pelonomi Bantsi, Banthasetse Merementsi, Godisang Radisigo, Mpezeni Sambandawe, Florah Mpetsane, Diana Kaartz, Lemon Mothibi, Motlhophi Leo, Francinah Jawe, Bashi Kgakge, Jomo Dithebe, Molemi Galeragwe, Moemedi Dijeng, Sefane Phuthego, Khumo Lekoko, Gabogopole Sebele, Kavis Kario, Tebogo Boalotswe, Benjamin Morokonyane and Francisco Kgoboko.
“The team chosen by the president is [a] very diverse, hardworking [group of] democrats. The aim is to reset, re-energise, rejuvenate the organisation,” BDP spokesperson, Kagelelo Kentse said.
“It has youth and it can help to attract other youth. The committee is mainly tasked with political education at structures and internal party elections.”
He added the reason why the committee has been enlarged is to be able to educate the members about the party.
In addition, he said one of the PEEC responsibilities is to educate the members on the important elections and party primary elections (Bulela Ditswe).
Kentse said it is important for members to know the party culture and its policies.
“PEEC’s responsibility is also to take care of election issues, especially during the time of by-elections and general elections. It should always be at the forefront to be prepared for the voters roll and polling stations. They also ensure that party primary elections are free and fair,” he said.
