Africa-Press – Botswana. After being granted maternity leave by the doctors, Village Magistrate’s Court this morning scheduled heavily pregnant murder accused Kitso Mokonopi’s next court appearance to January 11 next year.

Mokonopi faces a murder charge, accused of fatally stabbing her boyfriend and the father of her unborn child with a sharp object. In today’s court session, Prosecutor Ame Mojaki, substituting for Botho Gobuamang, the primary prosecutor, informed the court that the accused had been granted maternity leave and would resume proceedings after her maternity period. Mojaki appealed to the court stating, “I have been appraised that the accused is on bail and it has been said to us that she is supposed to go for maternity leave. Therefore, we request that the next court date be set in the following two months.”

Given the opportunity to present her perspective, Mokonopi informed the court that her maternity period spans over two months, necessitating additional time. She explained, “My maternity leave starts August 18 and is anticipated to end on November 22.” In response, Presiding Magistrate Tshepo Tshedi granted the accused’s request for an extended timeframe. Tshedi declared, “The accused will be scheduled for the next mention on January 11, 2024, for a status update. The accused’s bail conditions will remain unchanged.”
