Africa-Press – Botswana. With costs varying between cultures and families, government will not standardise bogadi (dowry) and tshenyo (damages). This was revealed by Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Talita Monnakgotla at the ongoing 14th meeting of the 4th Ntlo Ya Dikgosi.

Bogadi is a sum of money or cattle that can be paid to the bride family to prove that she is indeed valuable and as a sign of appreciation from the groom’s family. Tshenyo or damages on the other side according to customary law is charged when a man who, out of wedlock, impregnates a woman who has never before fallen pregnant.
