Africa-Press – Botswana. With the Okavango River now overflowing, certain parts of the Okavango District are at risk of flooding after the river received water from neighbouring countries of Angola and Namibia.

The district received more rain this year especially in January and that made the land soggy hence the river was overflowing. In an interview, Okavango District commissioner Mr William assured that the District Disaster Committee was prepared for any eventuality, to assist members of the community who might be affected by the floods.

Etsha 13, Ikoga and some villages in the eastern part of the Okavango Delta such as Eretsha, Mr Keareng said, were more at risk. He said so far, about six homesteads were facing possible flooding in Etsha 13 and that one of the families was assisted with a tent that they could use should the need arise. Mr Keareng cautioned the people of Okavango to be vigilant at all times and monitor children’s movement.

A 44 year-old resident of Boyei Ward in Etsha 13, Ms Lebuang Oagetsweng told BOPA that the water was threatening to flood their homes with their backyard garden already submerged. Ms Oagetsweng said they last experienced flooding in 2010 even though the water volume was less then.

Another resident, 47-year old, Ms Ndozi Seditsi said when the area was flooded back in 2010, they were evacuated from their homes to a safer place at Botshabelo ward and assisted with tents and lived there for a year before she moved to her current place.
