UDC Fulfills P2 500 Wage Promise via Ikageng Reforms

Africa-Press – Botswana. The Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) has fulfilled one of its key 2024 election manifesto promises following Cabinet’s approval of an increase for the new Ikageng Programme replacing Ipelegeng wage of P2 500 by April next year.

The wage adjustment forms part of the transformation part of the long running Ipelegeng programme into the Ikageng Public Works Programme, a restructured national initiative aimed at promoting sustainable livelihoods.

Under the revised framework according to a press statement released by government earlier today, beneficiaries of the new programme would earn P2 500, replacing the old P800 pay.

“As part of this commitment, government has revised the Ikageng wage rate to P2 500 under a sustainable, performance based remuneration system,” the release read.

The UDC had pledged during the 2024 election campaign to improve wages for government supported workers and reduce poverty through dignified employment.

Announcing the new programme with improved wages, government said the transformation reflects a shift from welfare based relief to productivity driven model that links earnings to measurable outputs.

In the new programme, beneficiaries will also access structured technical and vocational education aligned with labour market needs and the national TVET policy.

“The programme will prioritise community led project identification to ensure alignment with local development needs. Beneficiaries will participate in productive sectors such as agriculture (crop and animal production, aquaculture and apiculture), tourism through cultural and heritage development, manufacturing, environmental conservation and other community based economic activities that stimulate local economies,” read the statement.
