Africa-Press – Botswana. The Government of Botswana has announced that the new administration will finalize a comprehensive review of the Youth Development Fund (YDF) by the end of this month. Established in 2009/10, the YDF is designed to support youth entrepreneurship through a combination of loan and grant financing, providing 50 percent of funding as a loan and 50 percent as a grant. The initiative has been a key mechanism for empowering young entrepreneurs, helping them start and expand businesses across the country. Authorities aim to ensure that the fund remains relevant, effective, and aligned with current economic needs. The review will assess the fund’s performance, identify areas for improvement, and determine how best to enhance its impact on youth-led enterprises.

Assistant Minister Lawrence Ookeditse, responding in parliament, confirmed that the revised YDF framework will be implemented in the next financial year. The government intends to introduce updated guidelines and processes to streamline applications, improve accountability, and enhance support for beneficiaries. Officials are reviewing eligibility criteria, disbursement procedures, and monitoring systems to ensure the fund reaches youth who demonstrate viable business potential. This holistic approach aims to strengthen financial governance while encouraging innovative and sustainable entrepreneurship. By modernizing the framework, the administration seeks to maximize the fund’s contribution to youth employment and economic diversification.

Concerns have been raised regarding the proper use of YDF resources. Mabuse Pule, Member of Parliament for Kgatleng East, emphasized the need for public education alongside the revised framework. He warned that without adequate awareness and guidance, some youth might misuse the funds or fail to establish viable businesses. Public education campaigns will play a critical role in informing applicants about responsibilities, reporting requirements, and business planning best practices. Ensuring that beneficiaries understand the proper use of funds will increase the likelihood of successful enterprises and reduce financial mismanagement. These measures aim to protect the integrity of the program while promoting meaningful economic participation by young people.

The review also seeks to address challenges observed in previous years, including low repayment rates, limited monitoring, and uneven regional access to the fund. By incorporating lessons learned from past implementation, the government intends to create a more transparent, accountable, and equitable system. The revised framework may include mentorship programs, capacity-building initiatives, and stronger follow-up mechanisms to support youth entrepreneurs. Enhancing these elements will improve the fund’s sustainability and its long-term impact on Botswana’s economic landscape. The government recognizes that youth-led businesses are essential drivers of innovation, job creation, and national growth.Youth Skill Workshops

The upcoming completion of the YDF review represents a significant step toward strengthening youth entrepreneurship in Botswana. By modernizing the fund, implementing better oversight, and promoting public education, the government aims to ensure that young people can access resources responsibly and successfully. The revised framework is expected to launch in the next financial year, marking a new chapter in empowering youth and fostering business development. Proper execution of these measures will enhance transparency, reduce misuse, and support sustainable economic growth. Ultimately, the initiative seeks to equip young Batswana with the tools, knowledge, and financial backing to thrive as entrepreneurs.
