Africa-Press – Botswana. A huge white diamond of more than 1,000 carats has been extracted in Botswana, in the mine operated by the Canadian company Lucara Diamond. This African country is one of the largest diamond producers in the world.
Located in Botswana, the Karowe diamond mine has announced that it has extracted a diamond of more than 1,000 carats.
It is a white gem of 1,080.1 carats type IIA, said in a press release published in early August Lucara Diamond, Canadian owner of the mine. The stone measures 82.2 x 42.8 x 34.2 millimeters.”As we shift to underground mining exclusively in the South Lobe, the preponderance of large, high-value stones increases,” according to Eira Thomas, managing director of Lucara.
In 2015 the Lesedi La Rona, of 1,109 carats, was unearthed. In 2019, Sewelô, weighing 1,758 carats, was discovered. In 2021, the mine announced that it had found a 1,174 carat gemstone.
The Karowe mine is one of the few projects in the country that is not part of the deal between the government and diamond giant De Beers . The Karowe mining license runs until 2046.
Botswana is Africa’s leading diamond producer and one of the largest in the world.
