Africa-Press – Botswana. The Botswana Landboards, Local Authorities Health Workers Union (BLLAHWU) and the Directorate of Public Service Management (DPSM) have agreed to replace the A3, A2, and A1 salary bands with a P4, 000 minimum wage as soon as the economy recovers – whenever that might be!
During a series of meetings held between May and June, the parties also agreed that the housing allowances for the scale should go up.
“The union party maintains that Government must raise the floor of public service pay to P4, 000 per month as basic salary to enable workers to have access to pension pay out and to be credit worthy. The employer acknowledges the importance of improving the public service minimum wage however, the financial and economic situation does not permit anything other than a living wage of P4, 000 made up of a basic salary augmented with a fixed allowance,” confirmed a joint statement from the DPSM, and BLLAHWU.
Both parties further acknowledged that there are overlaps between salary grades A2, A3 and B1, C4.
“In order to correct this, guidelines will be developed to address the overlap in respect of the affected employees. The guidelines will be developed and concluded by the 31 st August. In the interim, no employee shall be disadvantaged upon promotion to the higher grade,” said the joint statement issued this week.
Salary bands A1 to A3 primarily relate to lower-level positions, often involving manual and administrative tasks within the public service.
These bands typically have entry-level positions and may include roles like office cleaners, messengers and security guards.
