Africa-Press – Botswana. President Advocate Duma Boko has appreciated Lucara Botswana for their devotion in mining the country’s natural diamonds that continue to benefit the people in the best possible way.

“I am grateful for what Lucara is doing,” Advocate Boko said during a courtesy call by Lucara Botswana team led by managing director, Ms Naseem Lahri at Office of the President on December 11.

The courtesy call was to update the President Boko on Lucara’s mining activities and to afford him and cabinet the opportunity to get first hand information and view of the high value and magnificent diamonds extracted from Karowe Diamond Mine in Letlhakane.

Lucara, through its mining activity at Karowe Mine, had in the past extracted epic diamonds including the recent discovery of an exceptional 2.492 carat, now the largest rough and high value diamond ever to be discovered in the world.

The President, therefore, noted that the revenue generated through diamonds had gone a long way in transforming and improving livelihoods.

He commended Lucara Botswana for investing in Mega Diamond Recovery (MDR) X-ray Transmission (XRT) technology to recover diamonds and maximise the overall processing efficiency.

Even though costly, President Boko said the use of such a technology was placing Botswana in the lead in terms of art and science in mining.

He said the world had a lot to learn from Botswana and seek to emulate what was done, especially in the mining sector.

Adv. Boko said the country must be proud of what it was doing as well as appreciate the support of development partners, particularly those in mining such as Lucara in improving the profile of the country.

Lucara Botswana managing director, Ms Naseem Lahri Lahri said with the aid of advanced technology, the company was able to extract huge and unique diamonds. As the leading producer of large and exceptional diamonds, she said to date, Lucara was the only mining company using XRT technology which assisted in extracting world leading diamonds in terms of size and value.

She said their latest discovery, the 2.492-carat diamond, the largest stone in the world would be given a name in the near future.

Minister of Minerals and Energy, Ms Bogolo Kenewendo said the courtesy call to President Boko and cabinet was to share Lucara’s story on the discovery of world leading diamonds in the country at Karowe Diamond Mine.
