Africa-Press – Botswana. Minister of Health, Hon. Dr Stephen Modise, has raised concerns over the rising number of HIV cases in Botswana. Speaking at the 2025 World AIDS Day commemoration in Kanye, he revealed that approximately 4,120 new HIV infections were recorded last year. Dr Modise described the trend as worrying, given the extensive public education campaigns conducted over the years.

The Minister urged Batswana to sustain the progress the country has achieved in HIV prevention and treatment. Earlier this year, Botswana was awarded the gold tier, recognizing its success in moving toward the elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV. The achievement reflects the country’s strong performance against the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets. These targets aim for 95% of people living with HIV to know their status, 95% of those diagnosed to receive Antiretroviral Treatment (ART), and 95% of those on ART to achieve viral suppression. Botswana has exceeded these benchmarks, demonstrating its commitment to effective HIV management.

Dr Modise cautioned that continued new infections could reverse the country’s gains. He emphasized the need for sustained prevention, early diagnosis, and consistent treatment adherence. The Minister encouraged communities, civil society, and government agencies to work together to maintain the progress made in reducing HIV transmission and protecting public health.

He concluded by urging citizens to remain proactive in HIV prevention efforts. Dr Modise highlighted that ongoing commitment from individuals and institutions is crucial to ensure that Botswana stays on track toward eliminating new infections and maintaining its status as a regional leader in HIV response.
