Africa-Press – Botswana. Botswana Football League (BFL) hold its elective general assembly.Top on the agenda will be the election of the independent league chairperson and director by the delegates.
The league’s acting chief executive officer, Bennett Mamelodi, said in an interview that the annual general assembly was supposed to have been held early September but it was postponed due to some irregularities.
He said they were then directed by the Botswana Football Association (BFA) president, Tariq Babitseng, and his national executive committee to hold the assembly as they prepare to start the new season on Friday.
The assembly, he said, would also elect the new board of directors that would govern in the new dispensation, where the Premier League would be a stand-alone entity whilst First Division becomes ‘incubated’ under the BFA until further notice.
He said there shall be an independent chairperson and director, adding that one of the requirements to qualify for the post was that the candidates should be individuals who are not employees of the BFL, the BFA or any member of the BFA.
The candidates should further not have been active in the management of any club in Botswana in the last five years.
“Regarding the two positions, a notice was issued beginning of last week, where we requested people to submit expression of interest, and the deadline was on Friday,” he said.
Mamelodi said the applications were given to an independent body to evaluate and short-list suitable candidates to then be presented to the assembly for endorsement.
He said there would be other positions that would be voted for by the assembly, from amongst themselves to make a board that would govern the league for a period of four years.
“The assembly will also consider audited financial statements and I can confidently say, once again the Premier League has received a clean audit,” he said.
They will also consider the Memorandum of Agreement between BFA and BFL, which sets out how the two parties are going to relate going forward as the federation hands back the autonomy to BFL.
