Africa-Press – Botswana. With the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) set to apologise to its former leader Ian Khama this coming Saturday, the Botswana Patriotic Front (BPF) says the apology is fake and that it is a tactic by the former ruling party
The BDP, under the leadership of Mpho Balopi, recently announced it will be sending a delegation to Serowe to issue an apology. In a statement released this morning, the BPF Secretary of Information and Publicity, Thabang Kopelo, has issued terms of the apology to the BDP.
The BPF has issued eight conditions to the BDP; to apologise to the nation for systemic collapse, apologise to Wilhelmina Maswabi and family, to the late Isaac Kgosi’s family, the former police commissioner Keabetswe Makgophe, and the BaGammangwato, Batawana, Bayei, Bakgatla, as well as other ethnic groups like Basarwa, Bakalaka, Bakgalagadi, just to mention a few. The BPF also wants BDP to apologise to victims of political imprisonment and rampant corruption.
According to the BPF, the BDP was quiet when its former leader, Mokgweetsi Masisi, unleashed ‘havoc’. “Let it be known without ambiguity that the BDP is a political corpse whose stench of corruption, authoritarianism, and betrayal continues to poison our nation; its theatrics must never be entertained,” Kopelo said in a statement.
Khama helped form the BPF on the eve of the 2019 General Election and quit his role as party patron to take up his duties as the BaGammangwato tribe chief last year after the BDP was ousted from power by the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC).
