Africa-Press – Botswana. The Assistant Minister of Child Welfare and Basic Education has asked the BTC Francistown Marathon organisers to host the activation in Masunga again.
Speaking at the marathon activation on Saturday, Justin Hunyepa also advised BTC to introduce some paraphernalia that would market the marathon and the corporation to the outside world adding that colouring the event would encourage more young people to participate. He further called for regular exercising as it had numerous benefits for both physical and mental health.
He said regular exercising protected the body against ailments from non-communicable diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure and also promoted cardiovascular health, stronger bones and muscles, better sleep, a reduced risk of chronic diseases like heart disease and some cancers.
“Additionally, exercise boost mood, reduce stress, improve cognitive function and enhance overall well-being,” he said, adding that it equally offered immediate and long-term benefits.
Welcoming participants at the marathon activation, Kgosi Thabo Maruje III of Masunga said the BTC marathon had contributed immensely to the country and healthy leaving. Thus, he urged Batswana to partake in such activities.
BTC retail manager-North Kao Maribe thanked residents of North East District for participating in large numbers during the activation. He said this was the first activation attended by a large crowd, adding that such had put the district and Masunga on the map.
North East District Council chairperson, Mbaakanyi Smart pleaded with BTC to consider bringing the marathon to Masunga in future after maintenance of Masunga Sports Complex. He said hosting the marathon, would promote small businesses and the transport industry around the district.
One of the runners, Gofaone Mhlambi who has registered for the marathon, said the activation was worthwhile as she managed to run 10 kilometres. The BTC Francistown Marathon will be held at the Obed Itain Chilume Stadium in Francistown on April 26.
