Africa-Press – Botswana. Clad in multi-coloured cultural attire, the Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (BUAN) community gathered at its campus in Sebele recently to celebrate its rich cultural diversity, a cornerstone of its vibrant community.

Addressing attendees, BUAN Vice Chancellor, Professor Ketlhatlogile Mosepele stated that diversity was a source of strength, dynamism, versatility and resilience for the university. He said that inclusivity was central to BUAN’s mission, fostering an environment where cultural heritage was recognised and valued, adding that embracing each other’s unique backgrounds promotes both individual growth and community cohesion, which are essential for the university’s ethos.

Prof. Mosepele expressed that BUAN aimed to produce technologically adept and innovative graduates equipped for diverse career opportunities.

“This ambition is enhanced by blending local and expatriate academic influences, creating a holistic educational experience where knowledge flows across borders and disciplines,” he added.

He said that the university also emphasised entrepreneurship and practical learning, which helped students navigate future careers in various sectors, including agribusiness and sustainable development.

The institution’s commitment to multiculturalism, Professor Mosepele said, was further demonstrated through partnerships with international academic institutions, facilitating staff and student exchanges with countries such as the USA, Finland and South Africa. These initiatives, he said, actively promoted cultural exchange and understanding within the BUAN community.

Reflecting on the importance of cultural identity in nation building, figures like Sir Seretse Khama to underscore the necessity of a strong cultural foundation. He urged the BUAN community to celebrate their differences and use them as opportunities for learning and appreciation.

As BUAN aspires to become one of Africa’s most impactful universities by 2036, Professor Mosepele expressed gratitude to the expatriate staff and students whose contributions enriched the university’s culture.

He added that by valuing cultural diversity, BUAN sets an example of unity and strength in an increasingly globalised world. The day would not have been complete without an assortment of music and dance, accompanied by a selection of traditional snacks.
