Africa-Press – Botswana. Special Advisor to the President of Burkina Faso on Natural Resources, Mr Nicolas Kagambega has praised Botswana as a continental model of political stability and effective governance.
In an interview following a courtesy call to the Ministry of International Relations, Special Advisor to the President of Burkina Faso on Natural Resources, Mr Kagambega who led a delegation on a week-long benchmarking mission to Botswana, said: “Botswana’s prudent management of its mineral wealth, especially diamonds, and its strong institutions offer valuable lessons for Burkina Faso”.
The mission aimed at strengthening collaboration and learning from Botswana’s well-regarded successes in policy formulation, governance, and mineral resource management.
“We are particularly interested in Botswana’s approach to policy coherence, anti-corruption measures, and citizen engagement in governance,” he added.
Mr Kagambega said Botswana stood out as a good example of good governance and anti-corruption efforts.
“We have chosen to learn from Botswana as Burkina Faso begins to develop its mining sector,” he added, saying they want to ensure that the benefits of their natural resources reach the wider population.
“Burkina Faso is relatively new in the mining sector, and we are eager to understand how to manage the entire mining value chain, from exploration to production, beneficiation, and revenue distribution,” said Mr Kagambega, further stating that Botswana’s example showed how good governance and long-term planning could ensure that underground resources truly benefit the people.
The delegation studied Botswana’s mineral revenue management systems, including the establishment of sovereign wealth funds and the integration of mining policy with national development planning. Botswana’s Minerals Policy, which emphasises sustainability, local beneficiation, and transparency, was highlighted as a best practice.
For her part, Ambassador Josephine Molefe welcomed the benchmarking visit, describing it as an opportunity to strengthen south-south cooperation. Ambassador Molefe said there was need for African nations to support each other’s development journeys.
“Sharing what works is essential in building resilient economies and accountable institutions across the continent,” she said.
The benchmarking mission underscores Burkina Faso’s commitment to learning from continental peers and adopting best practices that align with its national priorities under the Plan National de Développement Économique et Social (PNDES II).
