Africa-Press – Botswana. Following an appeal for help in identifying three people who were burnt beyond recognition in the tragic Audi A3–Mokoka’s Transport bus inferno, police have now confirmed the deceased have been identified.
The Mokoka bus, which was en route to Serowe, was involved in a tragic accident just after Dibete over the weekend that left three people dead on the spot.
The bus collided with the Audi A3 car that was en route to Gaborone. Videos of the bus and the A3 vehicle engulfed by fire surfaced on social media, whilst showing passengers who escaped taking cover for their lives.
Through a statement this morning, BPS confirmed that they have since managed to identify all the deceased persons – two bus passengers and the Audi A3 driver – through forensic examination.
“BPS would like to inform members of the public that following the tragic accident that occurred near Leshibitse Junction along the A1 road, which claimed three lives, the victims have been identified,” reads the statement.
BPS stated that they were able to identify all the deceased people, thanks to their family members for coming forward and providing DNA samples for profiling.
The victims have all been identified as women aged 32, 38, and 53, respectively. Both the 38-year-old and 53-year-old bus passengers hail from Serowe, whilst the 32-year-old driver of the Audi A3 comes from Taupye village.
BPS has since relayed that two more people are still receiving medical care following the tragic accident.
“Three of the five passengers who were admitted to the hospital have since been discharged, whilst two remain admitted with serious injuries,” reads the statement. The transport company has since extended their sincere words of encouragement for the distress.
“Our thoughts are with all affected, and we thank the community for their cooperation during this difficult time,” Mokoka’s Transport said in a statement.
