China success inspires Botswana youth

Africa-Press – Botswana. China’s remarkable socio-economic development serves as inspiration for youth in Botswana, says the Speaker of the National Assembly, Mr Phandu Skelemani.

Mr Skelemani, who was speaking during a courtesy call by the Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of China, Mr Peng Qinghua on Monday, said Botswana could learn a lot from China.

He said there was need for cultural exchanges involving young Batswana to learn and appreciate China’s tradition and economic trajectory, which was core to China’s development exploits.

Mr Skelemani said China, with a huge population of about 1.4 billion was able to feed its people.

This, he said was not the case with Botswana, which is struggling to feed its 2.4 million population.

As such, he said there were lessons that the country could learn from China to attain food sufficiency.

Furthermore, Mr Skelemani said the China had managed to propel the country to greater heights of being the second largest economy in the world.

He also said companies from China were contracted in most of the country’s economic activities such as health, construction and education among others.

Mr Skelemani said Botswana, as a developing country needed the support and experience of China in its development trajectory.

For his part, National People’s Congress of China Vice chairman, Mr Peng Qinghua said the relations between the two countries came from afar and the two enjoyed good relations.

He said China leveraged on the strength of socialism to pull together as one and solved problems of poverty as well as ending extreme poverty in that country.

He further said China had leveraged on technology for its development journey, adding that such helped farmers to use technology to sell produce throughout the country.

Mr Peng said in terms of international relations, China was committed to building a community of people with shared future.

He said the country would continue to assist and support other developing countries, including Botswana.

“We have taken measures to help our African friends to grow,” said Mr Peng, adding that their support to African countries included among others infrastructure development, trade, agriculture, environment and health sector among others.

The vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of the People’s Republic of China and his delegation will be in Botswana from September 24 to 26 and will among others meet acting President, Mr Slumber Tsogwane.
