Africa-Press – Botswana. Residents of the Mmalekwa area in Kanye launched a campaign to clean up the GaNgwaketse kingdom cemetery.

The clean-up was led by GaNgwaketse Queen Masetsibi Gaseitsewe and members of a multi-sectoral committee, including Kanye council, Sabata Nursing School and the Thamatlho Social Club. These cemeteries are said to contain a great example of Bangwaketse culture.

Speaking at the ceremony on Friday, the chairperson of the cemetery committee, Kgosi Edward Dibeela, said the clean-up came after the cemetery committee called for a joint venture, under the leadership of Mrs. a forest growing in it.

Kgosi Dibeela said the situation was unsatisfactory as the area belonged to the GaNgwaketse culture and therefore it should be kept clean in order to respect the chiefs and cultures of the community.

Meanwhile, Kgosi Dibeela said he was unhappy with some people who were disrespecting the cemeteries by passing through them, saying that was a lack of respect for the sleeping chiefs.

He said the committee had previously placed a notice at the cemetery not to pass through, as well as installing a garbage tank but to no avail as these items had been removed. He said the issue of unclean cemeteries affected the whole village as it was a concern in various Kanye dikgotla.
The chief encouraged the community to take care of all the cemeteries and to respond to the invitation to clean up the environment as no one can clean them up if they do not stand on their own feet.
