Africa-Press – Botswana. Alliance for Progressive (AP) secretary general, Dr Phenyo Butale has implored party members in the North West region to initiate a recruitment campaign aimed at attracting more individuals to join the party.

Addressing the North West regional elective congress held in Maun on Saturday, he said it was their duty to recruit more members to grow the party which he said played an instrumental role in ushering the new government committed to improving the living standards of Batswana.

Before general elections, some people, he said believed that AP was doomed but acknowledged that fellow members fought hard to ensure its sustenance hence they managed to change government after 58 years.

Dr Butale said members proved that indeed AP was a solid party of integrity that was trustworthy.

“A strong AP presents a strong Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) and a strong UDC presents a strong government which cares and prioritises the interests of the nation,” he added.

Dr Butale who is also the Minister for International Relations highlighted that some people believed that North West region was a stronghold for a certain opposition party and urged members to work hard to prove them wrong.

However, he said the government started well towards delivering its promises citing that currently, efforts were ongoing to revive the economy and introduce initiatives that catered for all Batswana.

He said government believed that development was all about capacitation hence they were coming up with interventions aimed to empower Batswana including young people.

“The government is determined to build a vibrant economy and eventually uplift the livelihoods of Batswana. We have the interest of the nation at heart and we are committed to serve the people.”

As the party prepares for the national congress billed for July this year, members were also encouraged to refrain from petty issues but focus on clean campaigns based on brilliant ideas that could take the party forward.

Dr Butale noted that they should appreciate that they had a humble and visionary leader who believed in unity and also understand that he was a servant of the people and as such urged those vying for elections to emulate his character.

“As a leader, you should understand that you are servant of the people and be seen promoting unity among the movement because no leader can deliver effectively in a divided party. Let us remain united and serve the people well with open hearts,” he added.

AP treasurer general, Mr Vasco Tatlhego also stressed that unity was crucial and should be the ultimate goal appreciating that members had shown that their party was still alive and stand strong in the last general elections.

“UDC win is a bold statement that our party which is an anchor to UDC formation still stand strong and we should not undermine ourselves because our party is now a key stakeholder in driving the economy and the future of the country,” he added.

However, Mr Tatlhego urged fellow members to elect leaders who could play a role towards transforming the country.

He also implored members to work hard in their region noting that it was their aim to field some representatives in Okavango district in the upcoming elections.

Party member from Okavango, Mr Gaothuse Mbambo urged party leadership to be proactive and address pressing issues well on time in regions.

He also encouraged leadership to visit various areas in Okavango to appreciate members and know each other saying that could strengthen cooperation, collaboration and communication within the party and eventually grow the party.
