Africa-Press – Botswana. The 2025 DTCB women football championship semifinal draw conducted at Lekidi Football Centre on Monday has pitted defending champions, Gaborone United, aka Red Roses against Selebi Phikwe based Nico United.

New comers, Orapa United will face Makgabz City from Tsabong in what promises to be a mouthwatering clash.

In the last edition, Gaborone United dominated as they thrashed Makgabz City 25-0 after which they faced Tawana Top Girls in the final, a game they won 8-1 to be crowned the champions.

Now, the question is, are the odds against the Red Roses?

Nico United has proved to be a good side, a formidable squad which on a good day can embarrass their opponents.

The Red Roses have overtime, assembled a solid and balanced team that delivered goods results.

Speaking during the draw, DTCB corporate affairs manager, Macdonald Motsele said they entered into a three-year partnership with Botswana Football Association (BFA) in 2022, to the value of P1.5 million.

He said they played a role at grassroots festivals and also sponsored a championship for women across four corners of the country.

Motsele said the sponsorship was supposed to end last year, but as DTCB they could now walk away for “such a good story,” he said.

“The story needs to be looked more into, we set a year 2025 to extend that sponsorship by a further P1.5 million , but not only to do that but to also to involve the key stakeholders and talk about real issues that affects women football,” he said.

BFA, chief executive officer, Mfolo Mfolo said he said they were happy that the regions were playing women’s football adding that regions, were the centre of football development where all the development emanated from.

He said when they started in 2022 they 66 teams, and 5 045 players that were registered in the FIFA connect.

The numbers increased in 2023, with 136 teams and 3 064 players registered.

Numbers declined in 2024-25 to 115 teams but the number of players increased.

Meanwhile, the first semifinal game between GU and Nico United will be played at Lekidi Football Centre of Friday at 11am.

Makgabz City and Orapa United will follow at 2:25pm, while the third and fourth runners up will be played at the National Stadium at 12:40 pm, followed by the final at 3:15 pm.

The champions will pocket P250 000, second position P150 000, third P100 000 and fourth position P50 000.
