Africa-Press – Botswana. Drug availability at Kgatleng East Constituency currently stands at 56 per cent, a figure below the national target of 97 per cent.

Minister of Local Government and Traditional Affairs Mr Ketlhalefile Motshwegwa informed Parliament recently that the decline in drugs availability at the Central Medical Stores (CMS) had in turn contributed to reduced stock levels across clinics.

Minister Motshegwa said that the President had, in his State-of-the-Nation Address (SONA), indicated that the country could expect significant increase in supplies in the coming weeks, an intervention, that was anticipated to improve the availability of medicines in the facilities.

Furthermore, he said that immediate measures being implemented to address the current shortages included re-distribution and sharing of medicines between clinics and hospitals within the districts and across the country.

Minister Motshegwa added that the district also continued to timeously place orders with CMS for items that were in stock and in the long term, the ministry intended to strengthen stock level monitoring system and to ensure continuous placing and tracking of orders with CMS to ensure timeous delivery.

Kgatleng East MP, Mr Mabuse Pule wanted the minister to update the House on the availability of essential medicines in clinics and health posts throughout Kgatleng East Constituency and to state immediate measures being implemented to address any current shortages identified and long term strategies to ensure consistent as well as reliable availability of medicines and medical supplies in the stated facilities going forward.
