Africa-Press – Botswana. Peter Kesitilwe, former CEO of the Botswana Gambling Authority, has been appointed as the first CEO of industry trade group the African iGaming Alliance (AIA).
According to the organisastion, the AIA aims to foster collaboration between operators, regulators and governments across Africa to create a responsible and commercially sustainable sector.
The group was founded recently by Betway, 888Africa, SportyBet and betPawa, and its members are licensed in 20 countries across the African continent.
“I am deeply honoured to be appointed as the AIA’s first CEO,” commented Kesitilwe.
“I look forward to working with regulators and policymakers to build a vibrant, sustainable & competitive industry that upholds the highest standards of responsible gambling and consumer protection.”
With a professional background in accounting, Kesitilwe was appointed as chief financial officer of the Botswana Gambling Authority in 2016.
He later stepped into the role of acting CEO in 2022, before taking on the role on a permanent basis in November 2023.
AIA board members also welcomed his appointment.
Anthony Prissman, head of new markets at Betway Africa, said: “Peter’s strong regulatory background and leadership experience bring immediate credibility to the AIA. We are excited to work with him to help shape a responsible industry across the continent.”
Dan Thompson, chief commercial officer at betPawa, Jai Mahtani of SportyBet, and 888Africa CEO Christopher Coyne also celebrated the appointment.
“Following a rigorous recruitment process, Peter’s vision for the future of iGaming in Africa stood out,” Coyne said. “We look forward to working with him and engaging stakeholders to deliver that vision.”
