Africa-Press – Botswana. President Advocate Duma Boko has announced at a kgotla meeting in Kgagodi that government would soon equip the police with advanced technology, including drones aimed at enhancing crime-fighting efforts.
President Boko highlighted the multifaceted uses of drones, which would assist in surveillance and monitoring operations.
“Drones can be deployed for various purposes, such as locating criminal activities both day and night, conducting investigations, and monitoring borderlines,” he explained.
Emphasising the need for the police to adapt to modern technology, President Boko stated that its implementation would enable law enforcement to work more efficiently for the benefit of residents. He expressed confidence in the skills and capabilities of the Botswana Police Service, stating, ‘the use of drones can significantly simplify their duties.’ Addressing the rising crime rates, the President reiterated government’s responsibility to safeguard citizens.
“Every individual should feel safe regardless of their location, and it is the duty of the government to ensure their protection. The integration of drones into policing will enhance public safety,” he affirmed.
The aerial advantages provided by drones, as noted by President Boko, would offer police officers a comprehensive perspective during operations. He referenced successful past incidents where police cameras installed in certain regions have led to the apprehension of criminals, indicating a positive shift towards more effective policing.
Moreover, President Boko informed the community that the government was currently negotiating with international drone suppliers to expand the range of available technology within the country. On other matters, President Boko emphasised the commitment to human rights, assuring residents that their rights would not be compromised under his administration.
“It is the government’s duty to meet the needs of its people, and they should not feel that assistance is an act of favouritism,” he asserted.
The President urged citizens to remain hopeful as the government continues to work towards fulfilling its promises and achieving prosperity for the nation. He reiterated the government’s commitment to paying pensioners P1 800 monthly, stating,
“While the current allowance stands at P1 400, I am optimistic that this will soon be adjusted to P1 800 as part of our dedication to supporting our elderly,” he said.
