Kazungula Truck Accident Claims Life

Africa-Press – Botswana. Police in Kazungula are investigating an incident in which a truck driver lost his life in an accident where a Zambia-bound haulage truck carrying mealie meal, overturned between Kazungula and Lesoma on Sunday.

Chobe District Senior Traffic Officer, Superintendent Agripa Gambule said the driver who was the only occupan was taken to Kasane Primary Hospital where he succumbed to injuries. He stated that police had contacted the owner of the truck company in Lusaka, Zambia and notified them about the tragedy.

Supt Gambule warned the public to desist from collecting goods from accident scenes and maintain a distance to allow police officers to conduct their investigations. Furthermore, he said arrangements were made with their Zambian counterparts for the repatriation of the deceased.

Supt Gambule stated that the Kazungula accident was the only fatal accident that occurred in the region this holidays. He pointed out that the A33 road was one of the busiest roads due to the volume of trucks transiting to Zambia, Malawi, DRC Namibia, Angola and rest of Africa.

Supt Gambule implored motorists to be vigilant at all times and take health breaks along their journey when they felt fatigued. He cautioned motorists about the high volumes of wildlife species along the A33 road and therefore advised drivers to desist from speeding on the said road. The traffic officer said law enforcement agencies in Chobe District had launched operations on the roads during this holidays.

“Most of our roads in Chobe are within wildlife infested areas which renders it a risk to mount road blocks in such areas hence we operate mobile police presence where we drive from one place to another,” he noted.

The operation he said intended to protect road users both motorists and pedestrians by conducting stop checks and disseminating information on the roads.
