Africa-Press – Botswana. Following President Advocate Duma Boko’s call for a radical transformation of the country’s agricultural sector through the use of innovative technologies, a Gaborone-based company has heeded the call by offering cutting-edge technologies that stand to revolutionise agriculture.
The technologies offered by Drone Technology Centre avail to farmers the opportunity to cut costs, improve the efficiency of their farming activities and also increase the profitability of their agricultural ventures.
In an interview, Mr Mojwadi Tsietso of Drone Technology Centre, a distributor of drones, said the Ghanzi agricultural show’s theme: Sowing Seeds of Innovation for Agricultural Transformation, spoke to the show committee’s commitment to raising awareness on the importance of having a transformed agricultural sector.
Mr Tsietso therefore, urged farmers to modernise and adopt technology-driven agriculture in order to reap the commercial benefits of a smarter, more resilient agricultural sector in the future. He observed that as a seed carries the promise of a plentiful harvest, deploying drones to monitor crops, map fields, and streamline input application, was a futuristic innovation that could translate into higher yields, reduced costs and new revenue generation streams.
“That would be a true demonstration of fulfilling the show’s objective of turning progressive ideas into transformative, profit yielding realities,” he said.
Mr Tsietso, who described their drone technology as user-friendly said after purchasing the drones, farmers undergo in-house training which usually took a period of three to six weeks depending on various fields of proficiency required by a client.
Furthermore, he said their models vary depending on the nature of the required specifications, with price ranging from a minimum of P15,000.
He added that, they also offered maintenance at an affordable fee and that they subscribed to Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana (CAAB) for issuance of the requisite licences.
Meanwhile, Mr Tsietso said though the uptake on the new technologies was still sluggish, there was hope that through extensive exposure and affordable prices, more farmers would embrace the new innovation for enhanced production.
On other issues, he called for youth involvement in agriculture, saying it was crucial to build the sector from the ground up even in terms of the people plying their trade within it.
He also implored lawmakers to ensure that they draft inspiring policies that would create a vibrant and sustainable sector that attracts and empowers the youth.
