Africa-Press – Botswana. This past week, the Minister of Minerals and Energy, Honourable Bogolo Joy Kenewendo, visited Lucara Mine in Letlhakane to tour its underground operations. She went 700 meters below ground, walking through tunnels carved from kimberlite rock, to observe the mine’s sophisticated systems and ongoing underground project. The visit offered a firsthand look at one of Botswana’s most significant mining operations and its contribution to the national economy.

Lucara Mine is implementing an underground mining project aimed at extending the life of the mine. Minister Kenewendo said the timing of her visit was ideal, allowing Ministry officials to see the project in progress and gain a deeper understanding of the diamond industry. She emphasized that such exposure equips the Ministry to communicate the diamond story effectively, highlighting that Lucara is not only extracting diamonds but also shaping Botswana’s future.

The Minister also stressed that changes in the global diamond market require adaptive strategies. She noted that partnerships with industry players like Lucara are critical to ensuring Botswana remains competitive and benefits fully from its mineral resources.

Lucara Mine’s Managing Director, Ms Naseem Lahri, welcomed the Minister and expressed delight at her visit. She highlighted that Lucara is recognized as one of the world’s safest and most efficient diamond mines, a distinction reinforced by an award received last year. Ms Lahri assured the Minister that as operations transition underground, Lucara will continue contributing significantly to Botswana’s GDP.

In addition to the underground tour, Minister Kenewendo visited the open pit section of the mine, which is scheduled for closure in 2026. The tour provided a comprehensive view of Lucara’s current operations, future plans, and the mine’s role as a cornerstone of Botswana’s mining sector.

The visit underscores the Ministry’s commitment to understanding industry operations and fostering collaboration with mining companies. It also highlights the importance of sustainable mining practices and strategic planning to maximize economic benefits for Botswana.
