Africa-Press – Botswana. The Minister of Youth and Gender Affairs, Hon. Lesego Chombo, has reaffirmed Botswana’s commitment to deepening collaboration with the United Nations to accelerate progress on gender equality and youth empowerment. During a high-level engagement, both parties highlighted the need to move beyond short-term, event-driven initiatives and focus on long-term structural interventions that produce sustainable impact. Minister Chombo emphasized that while political will and strategic direction are strong, gaps in technical capacity continue to limit the effective implementation of critical programmes. These include efforts in gender-based violence prevention, policy reform, and women’s economic empowerment. The engagement underlined the importance of embedding technical experts within the ministry to strengthen project management, resource mobilization, and policy development, ensuring that initiatives are delivered efficiently and produce measurable results.
A key priority discussed was the urgent need for technical support to enhance programme effectiveness. Minister Chombo noted that while strategic vision provides a roadmap, successful execution requires specialized skills and expertise. Embedding technical advisors would support evidence-based decision-making, improve monitoring and evaluation, and facilitate the scaling of interventions across regions. The integration of experts would also enhance coordination among various stakeholders, including local communities, civil society organizations, and private sector partners. By strengthening institutional capacity, Botswana aims to ensure that programmes addressing gender equality and youth empowerment are not only well-designed but also sustainable over the long term.
UN Resident Coordinator Wenyan Yang emphasized the agency’s commitment to providing coordinated technical expertise across its departments to support Botswana’s goals. Central to this collaboration is the proposed joint programme modeled on the Spotlight Initiative, which targets the root causes of gender-based violence while promoting women’s participation in economic and social development. The framework is designed to guide resource mobilization efforts, align donor support, and strengthen coordination among development partners. It also provides a strategic mechanism to monitor progress, evaluate impact, and ensure accountability at all levels. By leveraging this structured approach, the ministry and the UN aim to create a more cohesive and effective response to persistent social and economic challenges affecting women and youth.
Both Minister Chombo and UN representatives agreed on the need to fast-track the finalization and signing of the joint programme, which will unlock opportunities for funding and technical assistance. The agreement will serve as a foundation for sustained collaboration, enabling the implementation of comprehensive interventions that address systemic barriers to equality and empowerment. Minister Chombo further called for stronger alignment in strategic planning, urging the UN to actively participate in upcoming national strategy sessions to ensure a unified approach. This collaboration will ensure that interventions are integrated into national priorities, maximizing impact and fostering consistency in programme delivery across sectors.
As Botswana continues to advance its agenda on gender equality and youth empowerment, this strengthened partnership with the UN underscores a shared vision of building resilient institutions and removing structural barriers. The collaboration aims to create inclusive opportunities for women and young people, enhancing their participation in economic, social, and political spheres. By combining technical expertise, strategic planning, and coordinated resource mobilization, the ministry and its partners are poised to deliver meaningful and sustainable change. This engagement reflects Botswana’s commitment to long-term solutions that empower citizens, strengthen governance, and foster a more equitable society for future generations.
