Africa-Press – Botswana. The new UNAIDS Country Director for Botswana and Namibia, Dr Kia Zhou, paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Health, Hon. Dr Stephen Modise, signaling a renewed commitment to collaborative efforts in combating the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Dr Kia takes over from Mr Alanka Malviya, whose tenure concluded after years of supporting Botswana’s health initiatives. During the meeting, Dr Zhou expressed UNAIDS’ admiration for Botswana’s response to HIV/AIDS, noting that the country is one of the few globally to achieve and exceed the 95-95-95 targets set by UNAIDS. These achievements reflect Botswana’s sustained investment in healthcare infrastructure, public awareness campaigns, and targeted interventions for vulnerable populations. The discussion emphasized the importance of maintaining strong partnerships between international agencies and national institutions to ensure continued progress.
Dr Zhou highlighted that Botswana’s approach to HIV/AIDS serves as a model for other countries in the region, demonstrating how strategic planning and data-driven interventions can lead to measurable results. She emphasized the need to sustain these gains while addressing remaining challenges, such as reaching populations that are still underserved and ensuring consistent access to treatment and preventive services. The meeting underscored the importance of combining technical expertise, policy support, and community engagement to maintain momentum in the fight against HIV/AIDS. By fostering collaboration between UNAIDS and the Ministry of Health, Botswana aims to continue delivering comprehensive care and maintaining its leadership in regional health initiatives.
Minister Dr Modise welcomed Dr Zhou and reaffirmed the Ministry’s readiness to work closely with UNAIDS to advance its mission in Botswana and Namibia. He expressed gratitude for the support provided by UNAIDS over the years, which has been instrumental in strengthening national HIV/AIDS programmes, improving access to antiretroviral therapy, and implementing monitoring systems that track progress toward international targets. Dr Modise assured the new Country Director that the Ministry would facilitate her work and provide the necessary resources and guidance to enhance coordination and implementation of joint programmes. He also emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to innovation, data-driven decision-making, and the integration of preventive and treatment services across all levels of care.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss future priorities and collaboration strategies between UNAIDS and Botswana’s Ministry of Health. Key areas of focus include expanding access to testing and treatment, strengthening community-based interventions, and promoting education and awareness campaigns to reduce stigma associated with HIV/AIDS. Both parties agreed that sustained political will, technical support, and coordinated efforts are essential to maintain Botswana’s leadership in achieving global health targets. They also acknowledged the importance of continuous monitoring and evaluation to ensure that interventions remain effective, efficient, and equitable across all population groups.
Dr Kia Zhou’s visit marks a new chapter in Botswana’s partnership with UNAIDS, reinforcing the country’s commitment to achieving long-term success in the fight against HIV/AIDS. By building on past achievements, leveraging international expertise, and strengthening national systems, Botswana aims to maintain its position as a regional leader in HIV/AIDS response. The engagement underscores the shared dedication of both the Ministry of Health and UNAIDS to improve health outcomes, support affected communities, and ensure that progress toward global targets is sustained. This collaboration sets a strong foundation for continued innovation, effective programme delivery, and enhanced impact in the ongoing battle against HIV/AIDS.
