Africa-Press – Botswana. The Assistant Minister of Water and Human Settlement, Mr Motsamai Motsamai has acknowledged that old sewerage manholes need maintenance.

Answering a question in Parliament recently, he said that he was aware that sewerage manholes in Tlokweng were old and needed maintenance. Mr Motsamai said the Tlokweng wastewater scheme was due for rehabilitation and expansion to replace older components that could no longer be maintained sustainably, and to provide access to new areas.

Other challenges with the scheme, he noted, included limited infrastructure capacity owing to increased waste generation due to population increase, hence resulting in frequent waste spillages in the area. He said the other challenges were vandalism and misuse of the infrastructure by throwing foreign materials down the drains, resulting in blockages and frequent waste spillages.

Mr Motsamai conceded that the ministry’s budget for 2025/26 financial year was not sufficient to carry out full maintenance of the sewerage infrastructure in Tlokweng. He shared that Water Utilities Corporation would continue to monitor the infrastructure and replace any vandalised and missing manhole lids through the recurrent budget.

MP for Tlokweng, Mr Phenyo Segokgo had asked the minister if he was aware that sewerage manholes in Tlokweng were old and required maintenance. He had also asked if in his budget, he could help Tlokweng residents by maintaining the manholes.
