Africa-Press – Botswana. The Ministry of Sport and Arts and Limkokwing University of Creative Technology have formalised a partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding signed on 17 February 2026. The agreement will sponsor 20 individuals from Botswana’s creative sector to pursue professional qualifications valued at over P1.6 million. This initiative was first announced during the LUCT Class of 2025 Graduation Ceremony and aims to build technical capacity among artists and sports officers. MoSA Permanent Secretary Ms Nancy Neo Chengeta highlighted that the programme will allow creatives to operate at a higher scale and back their work with essential skills. The partnership reflects a commitment to professionalising the creative and sports industries in Botswana.

Ms Chengeta emphasised that developing the technical and business capacities of artists remains a top priority. The Ministry is still in its growth phase, and equipping creatives with formal education is critical for sustainable impact. LUCT Council Chairman Dr Ditshupo Ecco Maje noted that while Botswana is rich in raw talent, many individuals lack the educational background to monetise their skills effectively. He stressed that scholarships will help artists and athletes understand the business side of creativity, ensuring long-term career sustainability. The initiative aims to bridge the gap between natural talent and formal training.

Dr Maje also expressed willingness to expand the partnership with MoSA for future projects, signalling potential for broader collaboration. The signing ceremony brought together senior representatives from both institutions, underlining the importance of strategic alliances in developing Botswana’s creative economy. By combining technical education with business training, the programme seeks to generate a self-sustaining creative workforce. The initiative also supports national efforts to grow the arts and sports sectors as viable economic contributors. With access to international education and professional guidance, participants will be better positioned to scale their work and generate revenue.

The scholarship programme demonstrates a proactive approach to transforming Botswana’s creative landscape. It addresses challenges faced by artists who possess talent but lack formal qualifications and market knowledge. By investing in human capital, the Ministry and LUCT aim to create a skilled, business-savvy creative sector. This approach aligns with broader government goals of professionalising cultural industries and promoting economic growth. The initiative will serve as a model for integrating education, creativity, and entrepreneurship to strengthen Botswana’s creative economy.
