Africa-Press – Botswana. President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has extended heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Botswana following the passing of Ambassador Legwaila Joseph Legwaila, describing him as a “towering diplomat, a son of Africa, and a true friend of Namibia.”

In a message issued on behalf of the Government and people of Namibia, President Nandi-Ndaitwah conveyed condolences to President Duma Gideon Boko, the Government of Botswana, and the bereaved family.

She said Namibia will always remember Ambassador Legwaila for the pivotal role he played during the country’s transition to independence, particularly in his capacity as Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General under the United Nations Transition Assistance Group (UNTAG).

“His calm diplomacy, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to peace helped steer Namibia through one of the most delicate moments in our history, ensuring that our transition to independence was peaceful, just, and credible,” the President said.

President Nandi-Ndaitwah described Ambassador Legwaila’s service as an act of brotherhood and African solidarity. “He stood with Namibia not as an outsider, but as one of us — an African devoted to the cause of freedom and human dignity,” she said.

She further highlighted his close friendship with Namibia’s Founding Prime Minister, the late President Dr. Hage G. Geingob, and Founding Minister of Foreign Affairs, the late Dr. Theo-Ben Gurirab, noting that these relationships reflected the deep bonds of solidarity that shaped the liberation movements in southern Africa.

“As a nation, we share in the grief of Botswana and the Legwaila family at the passing of this great son of Africa. His name will forever be etched in the story of Namibia’s freedom and in the enduring friendship between our two nations,” Nandi-Ndaitwah stated.

She concluded by saying that Ambassador Legwaila’s legacy would continue to inspire future generations “to serve Africa with integrity, humility, and vision.”
