Africa-Press – Botswana. In a thrilling display of grit and strategy, Moabe Ngaka from Tobane secured a Gold Rush boxing championship title in the 63.5 kg category, after delivering a decisive technical knockout on his opponent Ontlafetse Phane, in the fourth round of their eagerly anticipated eight rounds bout.

From the outset, the underdog, Ngaka executed a masterful game plan that gradually turned the tide in his favour. Phane began the fight with a series of powerful combinations, dominating the first two rounds and earning the crowd’s fervent support, but Ngaka remained composed and strategically absorbing early onslaught.

As the fight progressed, it became clear that Ngaka was biding his time, meticulously finding openings to unleash counterpunches. By the end of the second round, Phane appeared weary, his energy sapping as Ngaka’s tactical prowess began to shine through.

The third round proved challenging for Phane, who struggled to maintain his rhythm against Ngaka’s relentless pressure but managed to hold on. However, it was in the fourth round that the script flipped dramatically.

Ngaka’s relentless pursuit forced Phane into a defensive stance, displaying signs of exhaustion when cornered repeatedly forcing referee to halt the contest and declared Ngaka the champion as Phane knelt in defeat in one corner of the ring.

In a post-fight interview, Ngaka reflected on his performance, emphasising the importance of skill and mental fortitude. “I utilised everything I had and despite the early threats from Phane, I remained focused. In boxing, the true mark of a champion is resilience,” he said.

Ngaka’s victory not only marked a significant milestone in his career, but sets the stage for future bouts, as he continues to rise within the sport.

Fans were left eager for his next appearance in the ring, anticipating further displays of his exceptional talent and determination.

In other bouts, Gold Rush Boxing tournament showcased thrilling matchups and amongst the notable bouts, 23-year-old Kealeboga Alton emerged victorious in the fiercely contested 53.2 kg division, defeating 38-year-old, Thapelo Molatlhe by plit decision.

A split decision occurs when the judges do not unanimously agree on the winner, resulting in one or more judges scoring the fight in favour of one boxer while the others favour the opponent.

The 61.2 kg bout featured 23-year-old Aobakwe Mphezulu, who won against 30-year-old, Tshepang Babui, again by split decision, displaying the tight competition throughout the event.

However, not all bouts concluded in favour of the local fighters. In the 63.5kg division, Kutlwano Ogaketse faced a tough challenge against Zambia’s Joseph Kabwe and lost in a split decision as well, highlighting the competitiveness of the tournament.

Othusitse Tselapedi, a committee member of the Botswana Professional Boxing Association, expressed satisfaction with the tournament’s organisation and execution. “The tournament went as planned. Our goal is to enhance the event each year and increase the number of participating boxers, further promoting the sport in our region,” he said.

Gold Rush Boxing Tournament will be an annual fixture in Francistown.
