Africa-Press – Botswana. The Assistant Minister of Justice and Correctional Services has assured Batswana that forensic audit undertaken to trace government revenue and assets will be independent.
Addressing a kgotla meeting in Mmatshumo on Friday, Mr Augustine Nyatanga said the President would not have any influence on decisions and outcomes of the audit.
He said those implicated in corruption would be given an opportunity to explain how they acquired property found in their ownership.
Mr Nyatanga stated that the receiver office under his ministry would collect all properties that would be deemed government property during the audit.
He also informed residents that to ensure transparency, ministers had declared their assets as they assumed office.
The assistant minister also stated that BCL had been sold to PNR company, but there would be a Presidential Commission of Inquiry to establish the legitimacy of its sale.
On other matters, the legislator further stated that he was aware of the mammoth task of unresolved inheritance cases that his ministry had to address, promising to ensure that the cases were resolved.
In addition Minister Nyatanga stated that the new government had demonstrated it stood for the rights of its people, by honouring the late Pitseng Gaoberekwe wishes of being buried him in Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR).
Government, he said had appointed the Inter Ministerial Committee to comprehensively look into the situation of Basarwa in Botswana, including the communities of CKGR and come up with sustainable solutions regarding human rights.
For his part, the area Member of Parliament, Mr Keoagile Atamelang said forensic audit intentions were not to victimise anyone but to trace government revenue.
