OFFICIAL ENCOURAGES PUBLIC TO REGISTER TO VOTE

Africa-Press – Botswana. Kanye Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), Principal Elections Officer, Mr Richard Senthumoleng has urged all eligible voters who did not manage to register during the previous voter registration period to ensure they take advantage and register in the ongoing second supplementary registration.

Mr Senthumoleng said in an interview that the IEC had scheduled for the supplementary election to be held in order to cater for those who did not manage to register in the previous registration periods, and appealed for all to register as it was the last chance. “This is the last chance that has been provided for people to register.

We therefore wish to appealed to those who have reached the age of 18 years to take advantage of this process and register for the elections to ensure that they exercise their right in the coming election,” he said.

He said they had noted a low turn-up on the first day of the supplementary registration and further lamented that in an effort to reach a wider audience, they shall use public address system in order to sensitise the public.

Mr Senthumoleng, however, advised those who have lost their cards to visit their office and request for a duplicate instead of registering again as they are already in the voter’s roll. He shared that doing so would complicate their registration as such registration will be rejected and in that regard, they will not be able to vote.

Mr Senthumoleng indicated that they had set up 63 polling stations in Kanye East and 53 in Kanye West.

“We managed to complete our preparations yesterday and have set up polling stations in the village where our electorate can register,” he said.

Mr Senthumoleng said their target is 80 per cent nationally, adding that in the general voter registration, the Kanye East constituency registered 15 779 voters whilst the Kanye West constituency registered 14 013 voters.

He further shared that in the first supplementary registration Kanye East constituency and Kanye West constituency registered a total of 1 995 and 2 228 voters respectively.
