Parliament Launches NDP12 Seminar for Economic Diversification

Africa-Press – Botswana. Members of Parliament convened for the official opening of a seminar focused on drafting Botswana’s National Development Plan 12 (NDP12). The five-year plan is guided by the theme: Building a Diversified and Inclusive Deep Economy for Sustainable Jobs.

The seminar, spearheaded by the National Planning Commission in collaboration with Botswana Parliament, aims to shape policies that promote job creation, address climate change, and mitigate trade disruptions. NDP12 prioritises strategies that transform Botswana’s economic landscape from reliance on diamonds to a private-sector led, export-driven economy.

In his opening remarks, Minister for State President Hon. Moeti Caesar Mohwasa stressed the unsustainability of the current economic model, citing persistent fiscal deficits, external imbalances, and a narrow economic base as threats to long-term stability. He highlighted the need for Botswana to embrace structural reforms and economic diversification.

The Botswana Economic Transformation Programme (BETP) underpins NDP12, setting it apart from previous plans. The programme emphasises practical execution, private sector collaboration, investment in infrastructure, skills development, and the adoption of disruptive innovations to expand economic opportunities.

Minister Mohwasa stated that achieving these goals requires strengthened project execution. He urged the government and relevant stakeholders to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and with minimal scope deviations. He also challenged Members of Parliament to take active roles in monitoring and guiding effective implementation of the plan.

The seminar represents a critical step in shaping a more resilient and diversified economy. NDP12 aims to provide sustainable jobs, stimulate private sector growth, and position Botswana for long-term economic stability and inclusive development.
